“Environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior”, James Clear
People living in dry parts of the world learned to find and conserve water. People living in cold parts of the planet learned to keep themselves warm. People living by the sea learned to build watercraft and fish. The environment shaped human civilizations. Your environment shapes your behavior. Do you take an umbrella when it rains? Do you wear snow shoes when going out in snow? Do you wear light and loose clothes on a hot day? Of course you do. Humans are very skilled at adapting to the environment.
The good news is that we can change our environment. We have been doing that for centuries. Just look around you. How much of what you see is man-made and how much is natural. The only natural environment I see is outside my window and even that was landscaped by humans. We have modified the planet to serve us.
You can also change your environment at a personal level. Simple changes enable us to change our behavior. For example, I always forget to take my vitamins and forget to read before going to bed. Then I changed my environment to help me. I placed the vitamins on the dining table and keep a book next to my bed. Now I remember to take my vitamins with dinner and I read before going to sleep.
If you want to instill a habit, modify your environment to facilitate the change. If an environmental change is not working then try another change. Keep trying until you get the desired result.
Your environment shapes your behavior. How would you use this knowledge to achieve your goal?
