Inconvenient truth about truth

“It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong”, Voltaire

“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.”, Arthur Schopenhauer

Only a few centuries ago, it was common to burn people who disagreed with the authorities. Lesser punishment included being locked up and forgotten, torture, and excommunication. Since then we have become a bit more civilized but the fundamental truth has not changed. Anyone standing up for unpopular or unacknowledged truth with face the wrath of authorities and public anger or ridicule.

If anyone makes comments that go against commonly held beliefs, he could lose his job, see termination of business contracts, and even face public anger. In many parts of the world, it is not uncommon for a mob to attack someone for his belief, often leading to death of the person. In 2010, cow vigilantes killed 28 people in India because they worked in the meat industry and were suspected of handling beef. The attackers consider cows to be sacred and they felt they need to get revenge, set an example, or something else along those lines. The murderers were never caught and prosecuted. Killing people for their beliefs happens in every part of the world. Your region is no exception.

In the late 1990s, Internet stocks prices were reaching the stratosphere. A few expert investors dared to tell the truth that these are dangerous investments because most of the underlying companies had yet to make a dime in profit. The experts were ridiculed. Then the market crashed. Now, the market crash seems obvious to everyone. Today we have coins and NFTs. People who raise red flags about coins and NFTs are ridiculed and viciously attacked on social media.

Just because an idea is popular does not mean it is true. Facts are the foundation of truth. Popular opinion is not. Challenge the common beliefs with facts. If you find the truth, you would be tempted to communicate it to everyone. Be mindful of what happened to others who dared to do the same. Better to speak the truth in jokes or indirectly.
